What if my child doesn’t like swimming?

Swimming is an essential life skill, which could one day save your life. It’s imperative children are provided the opportunity to learn water safety in a safe, healthy and positive environment. Unfortunately, not all children will love their first few swimming experiences, however with patience, persistence and consistency, things will improve for them.

Keep calm. Approach swimming lessons with a sense of fun and enjoyment, and talk about the great things they will do in the class. Confidence and assurance is the key.

How often should I come to swimming lessons?

Swimming once a week, all year round, generally gets a strong result. Typically, if a student is enrolled and attends their weekly classes, great progress is made throughout the year. This progress can be accelerated by enrolling in school holiday intensive programs which occur each year of the school terms.

Please be patient and realistic with improvement. While we expect improvement, not all student progress at the same speed.

What should we bring to the class.

Please ensure you bring warm dry clothing and appropriate footwear for entering and leaving the centre. Please remember your towel as we don’t provide this service. We recommend all students wear goggles. It makes learning easier and gets better results.

For health and safety reasons, swim caps are compulsory at our centre. Only in Parent/Child classes, they are not required.

Are there swimming products available at the pool?

We have a full range of swimming products and accessories available at the centre. Our Engine brand product line incudes goggles, swim caps, swimwear, learn to swim equipment, bags, swim nappies and much more.

What temperature is the Pool?

The pool temperature is 32 degrees at all times.

Does the Parent need to get in the water?

A parent or guardian is required to be in the water for all Parent & Child classes (White Fins), which is up until the age of 4.  A child may enter a class by themselves prior to the age of 4, only if they are able to achieve the ‘Rainbow Fin’ certificate. This is for safety and time management reasons.

Irrespective, once a child turns 4 years of age, the parent is no longer required to enter the water.

As a general rule, we encourage the Parent to say in the water as long as possible. This ensure more swimming is completed each session and a much higher transfer into a class by themselves.

If in doubt, please check with reception.

Can we join classes anytime?

Yes. Enrolments are accepted anytime throughout the term fees are prorated.  We will assist you find the best class with student of similar age and standard.

Can we use the pool for swimming before of after our class.

No. Due to safety, use of the pool before or after class is not available in our facility. Please be respectful of others wanting to learn also and use the facilities for their families.

What is the parents role during class?

During ‘Parent & Child’ classes we require a parent or guardian to be in the water with the child at all times, until the age of 4. Use this time to develop your skills in holding, teaching and bonding with your child. For some parents, classes can be extremely satisfying and rewarding. So enjoy the time with your little precious one.

For classes with Parents outside of the water, you are required to Keep an eye on them at all times. For younger and beginner classes, we encourage parents to remain within a 5m distance of their child during class. This will provide some comfort for the child and also aid assistance in the unlikely event of a child submerging.

For classes higher than the beginner levels, you are required to watch your children at all times. We require you to stay within eye-line sight of your child at all times.

For advanced classes, you must remain within the centre at all times and be contactable by sight and hearing at all times.

Most importantly, you are there to provide support to your children. Please do so in positive and friendly way.

We kindly remind parents, that mobile phones are NOT to be used while their child’s lesson is in progress

What happens if the parent is really anxious about swimming lessons?

Keep Calm. Any personal fears or anxiety you may have about the water can be easily transferred to your child. Please stay calm, supportive and positive at all times with your child. Inform reception and the instructor privately about any concerns and they will support you through your child’s lessons.

What can we do as parents to help our child swim?

Encourage your child to attend every lesson. Acknowledge all efforts and achievements. Discuss challenges with positive approach.

How do I join Squad?

To join squad, you must have achieved the Red Fin 3 Certificate, which among other things requires a non-stop 800m swim. We conduct these certificate testing during school holidays. Please check with reception about the session times.

Why is my child not improving?

A key element of our promise to you, is that your child will improve. However improvement may not be made every session. At times, children plateau and require some time and patience to master the art. These plateaus are usually followed by periods of intense skill acquisition. Please just remain calm and happy and keep coming to your regular lesson, it will soon pass.
